General FAQ

Frequentlyasked questions

This General FAQ answers the most common questions about the Mini Apps Competition. Whether you are an experienced developer, an AI builder, or experimenting with vibe coding for the first time, this FAQ will help you understand how the competition works, what qualifies, and how to get started.

For technical questions about building, testing, and deploying your Mini App, refer to the Technical FAQ in the Developer Center. You can also post your questions in the “Technical Support” channel on the Skool Community.

Getting Started

Everything you need to know before joining the competition.

A Mini App is a web application that runs inside Nimiq Pay and connects to the user’s Nimiq or Ethereum wallet. It can be a game, a utility, a social tool, a payment flow, or anything in between. If it runs in Nimiq Pay and uses at least one wallet connection, it’s a Mini App.

Yes. There are no entry fees, subscriptions, or costs to participate.

Anyone 18 or older with a public GitHub profile and a Nimiq wallet. Participation is open globally, except where prohibited by applicable laws or sanctions.Prizes cannot be paid to participants in OFAC-sanctioned jurisdictions. Winners will be required to provide proof that they are citizens of an eligible country.

Yes. Teams of up to 5 people can enter together. Each team must designate one lead for communication and prize payouts. Each individual or team can submit one Mini App per competition cycle.

Post in the “Find a Cofounder” channel inside the Skool community. You can also connect with other builders during Sip & Ship calls.
Each competition cycle runs for four weeks. Check the Registration Dashboard for the current cycle’s start date, submission deadline, early access period, and more.
No. Many participants use AI tools, templates, tutorials, or existing projects to build their Mini Apps. You do not need blockchain knowledge to participate. If you want technical guidance, the Technical FAQ in the Developer Center covers frameworks, providers, and deployment in detail.
Yes. You will need a Nimiq wallet to receive prize payouts, which you can create at wallet.nimiq.com, and the Nimiq Pay app to test your Mini App and experience Mini Apps as a user. You can download Nimiq Pay on Google Play and the App Store.

Most builders treat this like a focused side project over the four-week competition cycle. You don’t need to go full-time, but you need to submit a working Mini App by the deadline.

Community and Support

Where to get help, connect with other builders, receive feedback, and stay updated throughout the competition.

The Skool community is where builders receive updates, ask questions, find teammates, share progress, get feedback, and participate in discussions throughout the competition. For technical questions, post in the “Technical Support” channel inside Skool or refer to the Technical FAQ in the Developer Center. If you are not already part of the community, here’s the link to join Skool.
Sip & Ship calls are live weekly sessions where builders can get unstuck, ask technical questions, receive feedback, share progress, and connect with other builders. Attendance is not required, but highly recommended. Here’s the link to add the calls to your calendar.
Yes. During the early access period in Week 3, the community can interact with your Mini App and share feedback. You can also receive feedback throughout the competition during Sip & Ship calls and in the Skool community. Feedback will be communicated through official Nimiq & Mini Apps Competition channels.
Yes. The Nimiq team is active in the “Technical Support” channel inside Skool to answer Mini Apps Framework questions. This is support, not collaboration on submissions. It is available equally to all participants through public channels.

Building Your Mini App

Questions about ideas, development, and submissions.

Anything that integrates with at least one supported token (USDT, NIM, or both) and that someone can actually use. Submissions are scored on design, functionality, usefulness and originality, and marketing, so the strongest entries tend to solve a real problem, serve a clear audience, and feel polished. Games, utilities, social tools, payment flows, and creative experiments are all fair game.

Yes. You can adapt an existing web app, template, or side project as long as your Mini App meaningfully uses Nimiq Pay as part of the experience and you have the right to use the code, assets, or templates included in your project. For a technical walkthrough of how to convert an existing project into a Mini App, see the Technical FAQ in the Developer Center.
Browse the full Mini App Idea List, or post in the “Validate Your Idea” channel in the Skool community. Other builders will help you brainstorm. You can also look for a collaborator in the “Find a Cofounder” channel if you want to pair up with someone who has complementary skills.

Yes. You can use any AI coding tools, including Cursor, Claude, GitHub Copilot, v0, or any other assistant. There are no restrictions on how you write your code, only that the final Mini App works and meets the submission requirements.

Yes. Mini Apps cannot use direct native Google Pay API payments, but they can use other third-party payment providers like Stripe, subscriptions, fiat on-ramps, or credit card payment systems. To qualify for the competition, your Mini App still needs to meaningfully use the Nimiq Pay Mini Apps Framework as part of the core experience.

Refer to the Developer Center for setup instructions, testing workflows, and deployment guides.
On the Submit page. Sign in with GitHub, fill in the form, and it opens a pull request to the official competition repository for you — no git required. The form accepts entries for the duration of each cycle: Cycle II runs from August 24 to the September 18 deadline. Merged entries appear in the showcase.

Rules and Scoring

How judging, scoring, and competition requirements work.

Yes. Competition submissions must use a public GitHub repository under an MIT Licence as outlined in the competition rules.
Submissions are scored by the Nimiq Community Council across five categories: functionality, reliability and usefulness; Nimiq Pay and Nimiq integration; real usage; design and UX; and the builder promotion checklist. Check out the full scoring rubric here.

Yes. Marketing and community engagement are part of the scoring criteria. Builders are encouraged to share progress publicly, attract users, collect feedback, and actively participate in the community. You do not need an existing audience or social following to compete. What matters is your effort to promote your Mini App and attract real users during the competition.

Yes. A focused, polished, and useful Mini App can score higher than a large but unfinished project.

Yes. Builders are encouraged to improve their Mini Apps throughout the competition. In Week 3, submissions enter an early access period during which the community can interact with them before final judging, making it a particularly good time to push updates and improvements.

Your Mini App should remain functional throughout the judging period. Significant downtime or broken functionality may affect scoring or prize eligibility. If an issue occurs, communicate it in the Skool community under “Technical Support” as soon as possible.

Using NIM or the wider Nimiq ecosystem beyond simply accepting a payment is worth 5 points inside the Nimiq Pay and Nimiq integration category.

No. All Mini Apps must be submitted before the official deadline for that competition cycle. Late submissions will not be reviewed or scored, but you’re welcome to continue improving your Mini App and submit it in the next cycle.

Yes. Previous winners can enter future cycles with a new Mini App but cannot resubmit a winning Mini App. Non-winning Mini Apps may be resubmitted in a future cycle if they demonstrate significant improvements or new functionality since the last submission.

Prizes and Ownership

Questions about prize payouts, ownership, monetization, and what happens to your Mini App after the competition.

The competition has a total prize pool of $50,000 USDT, distributed across three consecutive cycles. For the full breakdown of prize tiers and amounts, click here.
Prizes are paid in USDT on Polygon, distributed in three equal monthly installments. Each installment has its own requirements:
  • Month 1 (released after winner announcement): Mini App is live and functional, builder has accepted the prize terms.
  • Month 2 (released 30 days later): Mini App is still live and continuously accessible, critical bugs have been addressed, builder has responded to community feedback.
  • Month 3 (released 60 days later): Mini App is still live and continuously accessible, at least one meaningful update has been made, builder provides a short written summary of Mini App status and next steps.

If a builder fails to meet a milestone, that month’s payout is forfeited. Previous payouts are not clawed back. Builders are responsible for any tax obligations in their jurisdiction. Winners are expected to maintain their Mini App for a minimum of 12 months. While no further payouts are tied to this period, Mini Apps that become abandoned or non-functional may be removed from Nimiq Pay listings.

Yes. Mini Apps can include payments, subscriptions, tipping, digital purchases, premium features, marketplaces, and other monetization models as long as they comply with the competition rules and applicable laws.

Builders retain full ownership of their Mini App, code, and intellectual property. All competition submissions must be released under the MIT License, which allows others to use, modify, and distribute the code with attribution.

Yes. Winning and non-winning Mini Apps can continue evolving after the competition ends. Builders are encouraged to keep improving, growing, and maintaining their Mini Apps beyond the competition cycle. The goal of the competition is to encourage real, usable products, not temporary demos. Mini Apps that become abandoned, outdated, or non-functional may eventually be removed from featured listings or discovery surfaces.
